Men’s and Ladies’ Scholae

Men’s and Ladies’ Scholae resumed regular rehearsals on Wednesday, September 7, 2016! New member are welcomed on a rolling basis. If you are interested in joining, please contact the Director of Music at the email or phone number below. We look forward to hearing from you!

Men’s Schola

The Cathedral Men’s Schola is a group of men (high school age and older) dedicated to learning about and performing Gregorian chant (especially the proper antiphons) for various liturgies throughout the year. Polyphonic music is also performed from time to time. Members are accepted at all times throughout the year and need not be Catholic; the ability to read music is not necessary, but is taught along with Gregorian chant notation. A weekly rehearsal (Wednesday from 5:15 to 6:00pm) is required, but weekly commitment to a particular Mass is not; rather, the schola sings for various 5:00pm, 8:30am, 11:00am, and Holy Day Masses and other liturgies (e.g., Sung Vespers and Stations of the Cross) throughout the Church year.

This group is ideal for those who love and want to learn more about chant and enjoy men’s choir repertoire, as well as those men who desire a choral music experience but cannot commit to the schedule of Cathedral Choir.

Please contact the Director of Music, Mr. Bruce Ludwick, Jr., at Ludwick@stpaulsbhm.org or (205) 251-1279 x107, for more information.

Ladies’ Schola

The Cathedral Ladies’ Schola is a group of women (high school-age and older) dedicated to learning about and performing Gregorian chant (especially the proper antiphons) and women’s choir repertoire for various liturgies throughout the year. Members are accepted at all times throughout the year and need not be Catholic; the ability to read music is not necessary, but is taught along with Gregorian chant notation. A weekly rehearsal (Wednesday from 5:15 to 6:00pm, running concurrently with Mens’ Schola) is required, but weekly commitment to a particular Mass is not; rather, the schola sings for various 5:00pm, 8:30am, 11:00am, and Holy Day Masses and other liturgies (e.g. Sung Vespers and Stations of the Cross) throughout the Church year.

This group is ideal for those who love and want to learn more about chant and enjoy ladies’ choir repertoire, as well as those women who cannot commit to the schedule of Cathedral Choir. This schola is instrumental in that it helps highlight and recognize the contributions of women to liturgical music. Gregorian chant (and occasional choral repertoire) takes on a special, beautiful sonority when sung by women’s voices.

If you are interested in this new ensemble, please contact the Director of Music, Mr. Bruce Ludwick, Jr., at Ludwick@stpaulsbhm.org or (205) 251-1279 x107, for more information.
